The instruments used are a copy by Willem Kroesbergen (Utrecht, 1972) of a single-manual harpsichord by Bartolomeo Sephanini, and a muselar virginals by Derek Adlam and Richard Burnett (Finchcocks, 1973) after a 1611 Johannes Ruckers in the Vleeshuis Museum in Antwerp.

The first three volumes are confined to harpsichord and virginals: an Italian harpsichord by Cornelis Bom after a seventeenth-century original by Giovanni Battista Giusti, and a virginals built by Klaus Ahrend after Marten van der Biest (Flanders, 1580). The final volume uses a single organ: an instrument originally dating back to 1549 in the Reformed Church in Uttum, restored by Ahrend and Brunzema in 1957.
